mar vista house
Los Angeles, CA | 2022
In this project, there were series of research and documentation of an existing architecture within its immediate urban context, and a narrative exploration of its occupancy and use.  On the first day of studio, we began to study the Mar Vista tract and evaluated the neighborhood fabric. Even though the original Mar Vista plan included a total of 102 homes across five blocks, they were nearly identical, varying mostly in terms of the position of their garages and in their orientation relative to the sun and property boundaries.   We used this neighborhood to develop a spatial, tectonic, and narrative understanding of the house that was assigned to us.  We worked individually to develop a graphic presentation and written narrative that imagines and describes the spaces, qualities, configuration, and use of your assigned Mar Vista house and property.  In this scenario, I had the roommates where there was a Retiree homeowner and their two twenty-something roommates who pay modest rent in exchange for assistance with shopping and household chores.

CHAD RETIRED STRUCTURAL ENGINEER, 59 YEARS
Retired owner that doesn't like being static and stuck at home just after retirement.  His work has influenced his hometown over the past few years and has opened his doors to inspire other students into a success career and life.
When you find Chad inside, you'll find him working on small projects of his own or talking with Matt and Daniel.  Chad has been wanting to open doors for students yet wanted to make do this at the right time where he has time to mentor his new roommates.
His relationship with the students is close where he can share his ideas and experiences.

MATT ARCHITECTURE STUDENT, 22 YEARS
He is from Nashville, Tn, where he found interest in architecture since high school.  His dad focuses on construction and remodeling homes which helped him in picking the right career for him.  Was once a musician which is how his friendship started with Daniel.  His goal is to take the next step on what his dad is doing with homes today.
You’ll find matt in his room or Chad’s office modeling on his laptop or studying for the next history exam.  When he’s not designing, he’s out with his girlfriend Sarah. while Daniel is out of the house, he also spends his time cleaning up the most.

Matt’s relationship with the owner is the closest since the beginning, where he met Chad during his internship last summer.  While they both have different careers; they share the same responsibilities in designing for the safety of people.  However, his relationship with Daniel has only gotten better, especially now that they respect each other's space in a shared room.

DANIEL MUSICIAN, 23 YEARS
He is from Nashville, Tn; where his music inspiration was born since childhood his parents taught him everything, he knows about music to his family supporting his musical efforts in high school.  After graduation, he knew that he needed to move elsewhere to learn from others and be able to grow as a musician and sound engineer.
When you find Daniel inside, you’ll find him writing songs in every corner on the house and talking to Chad about his favorite artists and music.  Daniel also spends the most time outside the house and loves meeting new people.

Daniel’s relationship with Matt is close because they both grew up in the same the city. He acknowledges how busy he can get with school and projects. Daniel’s relationship with the owner is not as close to Matt’s but when he’s when he’s home, he knows how to put everyone in a good mood after a long day.
