Expressive art facades, Precedent analysis
WERK12
Munich, Germany | 2022
In the design of WERK 12, the design team wanted to define a public building to symbolize the regeneration development on an industrial site in proximity to the city. The project is highly defined from its expressive and most popular German expressions used in Donald Duck comics. These five-meter letters are depicted as an expressive art facade to the community and people near the bus station.
This building is a place where people gather at the center of Munich at night and has plenty of restaurants, bars, and places to gather with people. The transparency also allows people to see the inside as much as the outside to not lose the connection between outside and inside activities. The space is occupied by multiple restaurants, bars, and offices; the top floor is an innovations office for Audi, and just below is a whole floor dedicated to the pool. Each floor level also consists of mezzanine levels that provide a stunning view of central Munich. The arrangement of exterior stairs on the outside helps the interior to easily get around and reveals transparency. Similarly, outside circulation also provides structural strength in the use of diagonal stairs. Overall, the appearance of WERK 12 also focuses on simple geometry, raw materials, and illumination lighting in the dark.
